WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Sunday update: REAL STEEL the real deal! $29mil HUGE opening weekend! IDES ok at $11mil

 


     Fighting robots are bringing out the masses this weekend as the new Hugh Jackman stand-up-and-cheer flick REAL STEEL will open at a very strong #1 with an estimated 3-day total of $29mil according to Deadline Hollywood.

     It looks like audiences were hungry for good solid entertainment as the number is pretty high on this one.  A mix of robots that box, always reliable Jackman and a great advertising campaign helped REAL STEEL sell itself as 'must-see' to families and action fans alike.  The film cost about $110mil to make (plus advertising costs on top) but should handily make that money back and then some worldwide.

 

       Opening at a strong #2 is the George Clooney/Ryan Gosling political drama THE IDES OF MARCH.  Being as it's a look at the backstage world of politics it is a hard sell but it looks like it found an audience with an $10.5mil est. opening weekend.  Political dramas tend to open softer but have longer legs as adult audiences don't generally rush out on opening weekend.  This one should hold well into the coming weeks.

   

   
     Coming in at #3 is last week's top film DOLPHIN TALE.  It will gross about $9mil this weekend after topping the charts last week with $13mil.  It stands at $48mil after 3 weeks.

     In 4th is the Brad Pitt drama MONEYBALL.  The film isn't doing too badly (albeit not as well as the studio probably wished it was) and will end up with about $7mil for the weekend giving it a grand total of $49mil so far.

     For last week's holdovers 50/50 is down a not-too bad 39% while DREAM HOUSE and COURAGEOUS have bigger falls with 53% and 49% drops respectively.
