WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: SUNDAY Update - Hurricane Irene the big story! THE HELP a low #1 with $14.3mil. COLUMBIANA #2 w/ $10.3mil. DARK #3 w/ $8.6mil.

I guess the business for CONAN wasn't the only thing that blows...

A hurricane out east played havoc with a good portion of the movie going public making this the lowest 3-day weekend for 2011 according to Deadline Hollywood.

For the second week in a row, THE HELP will top the box office with an estimated $14.3mil over the three-day period bringing its total to a great $96mil.

Out of all the newcomers, COLUMBIANA will take the #2 spot with a so-so $10.3mil after opening Friday with $4mil.  Not too bad but I'm sure the lower PG-13 aided in boosting that number.

The new scare film (and remake of the 1970s telefilm) DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK will follow closely with about an $8.6mil weekend.  It started off with about $3.5mil and horror films are generally front-loaded so that figure should stand after the weekend.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is still holding up well.  It made $2.5mil Friday and should make $8.6mil for the weekend.  It stands at close to $150mil for its North American gross so far.

OUR IDIOT BROTHER opened up to poor reviews and that reflected in the box office stats which show it not opening to much more than $6mil for its opening weekend.

As for second Friday drops SPY KIDS 4 fell 51%, FRIGHT NIGHT was down 70% and poor expensive CONAN fell a disastrous 69%

EARLY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Saturday - THE HELP #1, APES #2, CONAN, SPY KIDS 4 and FRIGHT NIGHT all disappoint

In one of those box office rarities, last week's #2 film THE HELP will take the top position in its second week according to Deadline Hollywood.  Bolstered by strong reviews and great word-of-mouth, THE HELP should hit about $20mil this weekend after grossing $25mil in its first outing.

Still holding strong is the previous two-week champion RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES which should end up with about $17mil or so.  Its weekend gross brings its total to $134mil and climbing.

Stop staring at his moobs.  Really.  It's just plain creepy.

CONAN, SPY KIDS 4 and FRIGHT NIGHT all were released in 3D, all started Friday and all are DUDS.  SPY KIDS  4 takes third place with an $11.5 mil weekend.  CONAN is fourth with a sad $10.5mil three-day gross.  FRIGHT NIGHT makes a surprisingly bad $9mil and could actually be beaten by the three-week old THE SMURFS for fifth place once the actual numbers come through Monday.

The other wide opener was ONE DAY which had a slow start at $5mil for its first three days.

Among the holdovers FINAL DESTINATION 5 fell a surprisingly low 45% in its second week and 30 MINUTES OR LESS even less at 41%.  Word-of-mouth play a part in this?  Maybe.

Weekend box office: Sunday Update: APES #1 - $27mil. wknd est. , Impressive HELP #2 - $25mil. wknd est., DESTINATION #3, SMURF #4, 30 MIN #5, GLEE 3D dud at #6

In one of the more crowded weekend races this summer, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES will repeat in the #1 spot after a $27mil weekend according to Deadline Hollywood.  Apes should only fell only 50% from last weekend which is great for a wide summer release (it's usually closer to 60% or more).

The big story of this weekend will be THE HELP.  It scored an A+ with audiences (as tracked by Cinemascore).  Between that, the well-known novel it's based on and a lack of adult product out there, THE HELP is looking at an amazing $25mil estimated weekend. It opened Wednesday and had already grossed $10mil in two days.

Audience fatigue hit FINAL DESTINATION 5 as the film looks to take in only $18mil this weekend.  That's lower than the $27mil. the fourth FINAL DESTINATION grossed on its opening weekend two years ago.  That's a shame because after seeing it, I think it's actually the best of the series and has a nifty tie-in to the original film.

Competing for the young adult audience with FINAL DESTINATION 5 (and most likely splitting their movie dollars) is 30 MINUTES OR LESS which should take 5th place with a $13mil estimated opening weekend.

SMURFS actually beat 30 MINS. as it looks to gross $13.5mil this weekend.  It should be fine for a bit as there's a real lack of kid-friendly product out there.

And lastly there's GLEE 3D which will end up with about $6mil this weekend.  On the plus side I'm sure it didn't cost very much to make this quick cash grab.

More info as it comes in!

WEEKEND Box Office: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES rules with a $54mil est. weekend!! CHANGE-UP ugh at $13mil est. wknd.

"YEAH!  JERSEY SHORE is back on!  Fist pump everyone!!"

According to Deadline Hollywood RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES will easily take the #1 spot this weekend with an estimated $54 mil.

That's a healthy number and shows the APES franchise could overcome that 2001 Tim Burton debacle.  It is more impressive than the COWBOYS & ALIENS opening last weekend ($36mil) and that film apparently cost twice as much ($200mil) as APES.

It looks like a bad weekend for Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds as their comedy THE CHANGE-UP looks to be the lowest of the major 'adult' comedy openings of this summer.  The film looks to take in a sad $13mil against very little R-rated competition.  I'm guessing the body-switching plot looked worn out to audiences (even though this was more mature than the other switching movies).

As for second weekends, last weekend's runner-up THE SMURFS will take second place again this weekend with an estimated $21mil (41% down from last weekend) which shows the family film does have legs.

And last week's leader COWBOYS & ALIENS will take the expected big drop.  It's estimated by Deadline Hollywood to gross $15mil - a drop of 58%.

Alright, cough it up!
