GREEN LANTERN opened strong Friday with $24mil but looks like a slight disappointment with about $60mil projected for the three-day weekend.
Comparisons for the year: THOR opened with $65mil over three days while X-MEN: FIRST CLASS had $55mil in its opening weekend.
THOR looks to end its run with about $185mil which gives it a about a 3x multiplier (based on total gross divided by opening weekend).
Using the same math (most movies fall within a 2.5 to 3.5 multiplier) GREEN LANTERN should end up with about the same. The film's cost though is $300mil though plus millions more in advertising. It should be OK after foreign grosses get tallied.
MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS looks surprisingly weak for a kids film AND a Jim Carrey vehicle with only $18mil. It will probably lose a lot of its potential audience next week to CARS 2.

I just read an article that discussed how only the truly iconic heroes (Superman, Batman, Spider-Man) have movies that gross over $200 million. The writer described Iron Man as "Robo-Batman" (Eh?), being the sole exception to that box-office effect. But you're absolutely right about the costs and the foreign grosses: most Hollywood films make most of their money in the foreign markets, so Green Lantern should still be profitable.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe there is a Cars 2 (well, yes, I can, it's strictly a financial incentive as the first film grossed a lot of movie with the families)--that was the poorest received film Pixar had made. What's John Lassiter's reasons for making this film--to please his Disney overlords?

ReplyDeleteThe only thing in my opinion that made IRON MAN a hit was Robert Downey Jr. The character is truly Bruce Wayne-like (inventor, billionaire..)
I should update my story as I've researched GREEN LANTERN a bit more and found out that the $200mil production cost and $150mil advertising budget(!) brings the total cost to $350mil!! To truly be profitable it'll have to be a bigger success internationally - a much harder feat with a (sorry J) second-tier hero.
And CARS 2? A spy movie? Really? At least the first one had a message about 50s Americana being lost to modernization...
